01 · Data Handling

What happens to your data

Short version: it stays on your machine. The table below is the full picture.

Data	What happens
Screenshots / captured images	Processed locally in your browser for OCR. Never uploaded.
OCR text / notes	Stored only in your browser's local storage (`IndexedDB`) and as PNG files in your Downloads folder. Never transmitted.
Custom subjects	Stored locally via `chrome.storage`. Never transmitted.
Usage analytics	None. No analytics, no telemetry, no tracking scripts.

02 · Permissions

Why each permission exists

SnapNotes asks for the minimum permissions needed to do its job — and nothing else.

Permission	Reason
`activeTab` + `scripting`	Inject the drag-select overlay onto the page you're viewing when you press Snap.
`tabs` + `captureVisibleTab`	Capture a screenshot of the current tab for OCR.
`downloads`	Save your screenshot/note PNGs to your Downloads folder.
`storage`	Store your custom subjects and note index locally.

03 · Privacy Principles

Designed private by default

Local-first architecture — capture, OCR, search and storage all happen on-device.
Offline capable — the OCR engine ships inside the package; no runtime network calls.
Explicit translation only — pressing Translate opens Google Translate in a new tab, under Google's own policy. Never automatic.
No third-party SDKs — no advertising, crash-reporting, or analytics SDKs.

One exception, fully in your control: the optional Translate button sends your OCR text to Google Translate — but only when you click it. This is never automatic and never happens in the background.
